Interview with Jonathan Anderson

Founded in 2008 by Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson, JW Anderson is a British fashion label that has evolved into an internationally renowned and award-winning brand.

We spoke with Creative Director Jonathan about the cardigan’s success, why he turned it into an NFT and his ongoing relationship with akt.

Cardigan History

JW Anderson’s Colourblock Patchwork Cardigan, famously worn by Harry Styles whilst rehearsing for The Today Show, sparked a cultural phenomenon during lockdown. Desire for the cardigan prompted the piece to be crocheted by fans all over the world following a viral TikTok from influencer Liv Huffman, whose cardigan is now sitting alongside JW Anderson’s at the V&A Museum.

Humbled by the knitting trend, which was shared over 85 millions times, and a believer in the power of craft to inspire and enthuse, Jonathan Anderson released the pattern of the much-loved piece to encourage the knitting challenge. Now available for the first time in hyper-realistic, digital form, the realisation of the multi-coloured garment as an NFT continues the notion of championing craft.

Construction Process

Taking over 300 hours to create, a team of three specialist VFX artists from the film industry worked to build our digital incarnation of the Colourblock Patchwork Cardigan.

Working to minute detail we modelled every individual piece of fibre that makes up every piece of yarn in our knitted cardigan. By using a series of mathematical arguments, we were able to go in and weave each of the six knit stitch patches together, closely matching the process the JW Anderson design team completed for the physical version.

Interview with Faz Bukhari

All profits from the sale of this NFT will be donated to akt, a charity that supports LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25 in the UK who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment.

We spoke with akt president, Faz Bukhari, about the work they do and his own involvement with the charity.
